The Morphioni were a race of changelings who collected ancient and obscure knowledge and artifacts, many of which pertained to the Force. An old race, though not one of the First Races, they usually lived solitary lives, hiding their true identities and storing their hoards in hermit-like fashion in secretive locations around the galaxy. Most other races were not even aware of their existence, save the Travelers and perhaps a few others.

The Morphioni's powers gave them the ability alter their appearance to emulate another species of the same general size and shape, something that helped them to hide and perform their secretive activities. They were also all Force-Sensitive, which gave them an edge in combat and protecting their storehouses. They were not generally hostile towards others unless they felt their hoards were threatened in some way, in which case they could react quite violently.

Nevertheless, some Morphioni were willing to go to extremes to acquire what they sought, and occasionally their quest for power and knowledge led them to evil acts. A Morphioni known as Malphunoc masqueraded for years as New Imperium Jedi Division Warden Vynd Archaron, even while the real Vynd Archaron was living on Dathomir. Malphunoc eventually tried to turn the Jedi Order members against one another destroy the Division from within, and at the climax of the confrontation, he raided the Royal Palace Treasury on Varnus, stole artifacts there, and attempted to raise the planet's Planetary Repulsor and use its power to some unknown purpose. Malphunoc was stopped by the combined forces of the Division, killed by twin Focus Bombs from both Xar Kerensky and Icis Novitaar.

Another Morphioni was the key to Xar and his Jedi team finding the location of the ancient planet Mies. In payment for the information, they offered the Morphioni a hypersaber provided by Zalaria after she had defected to the New Imperium. Though Zalaria seemed to go along with the deal on the surface, after the team left she returned to retrieve the priceless blade and killed the Morphioni, eliminating any chance that information about her could be revealed or that anyone else would follow behind them.
